Naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn)

Similar to ibuprofen, but is longer-lasting

Cats are much more sensitive to its effects!

Inhibits blood flow to kidneys, leading to kidney failure, which can lead to death if not treated

Interferes with the production of compounds that help protect the lining of the stomach

The amount of naproxen ingested has a direct effect on recovery and long-term outcome

HOSPITALIZATION IS A MUST! There is no home-treatment, and NO SPECIFIC ANTIDOTE!

SIDE EFFECTS SEEN INCLUDE:

  • Appetite loss
  • Vomiting +/- blood
  • Black, tarry stool
  • Abdominal pain
  • Dehydration
  • Weakness
  • Lethargy
  • Severe stomach irritation, leading to ulcers

TREATMENT:

  • Hospitalization with I.V. fluids
  • Liquid activated charcoal to slow absorption (needs to be repeated every few hours) because of the long-lasting effects of ibuprofen
  • Blood transfusions may be required
  • Treatment of stomach ulcers
  • Multiple blood samples must be tested to monitor the status of kidneys and liver
